Band Salary Band E, £40,000 per annum pro rata
Hours of Work Full time. 5 days’ pay for 4 days’ work (5 days a week during first 2 months of employment)
Location Bristol office and home working. At least 1 day a week in the Bristol Office.
Probationary Period 3 months
Holiday 36 days per annum pro rata, to include bank holidays (28.75 days annual leave on a 4-day week)

Purpose of the role

  • Develop financially sustainable and repeatable revenue streams for City to Sea CIO & CIC
  • Develop and deliver products, services and projects that prevent plastic pollution at source
  • Lead the design and delivery of bids to trusts, government funds and grant-making bodies
  • Lead the Development Strategy and team to deliver against targets as outlined in the Annual Company Objectives.

Scope of the role

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will represent your department and are responsible for reporting back to the CEO and the Board on progress.

You will support, and where appropriate, occasionally deputise for the Chief Executive or other Heads of Department. The Head of Development is responsible for leading the team and owning the Development Strategy to achieve company ACOs. You are expected to work collaboratively and cohesively with other Heads to streamline business practices.

Main Responsibilities: 

STRATEGY

  • To author and deliver a Development Strategy that maximises value, innovation and opportunities and delivers against ACOs. Including setting vision, objectives, processes, KPIs, programme plans and workstream reporting, risk log & actions for mitigation, securing resources and budgets.

TEAM

  • Lead, manage and develop the Development Team.
  • Lead a high performing team that grows and attracts new opportunities to prevent plastic pollution that are sustainable, viable and high impact
  • Set (in conjunction with team), manage and deliver income and expenditure budgets, forecasts and stretch targets. Support team with regular financial forecasting and lead on reporting these figures to SLT and the Board. ​
  • Develop self and team through Shine competency framework. ​
  • Be familiar with and always adhere to all relevant City to Sea policies and procedures.
  • Plan best allocation of resources to deliver the biggest impact.  Ensure tools and processes are in place with internal stakeholders to effectively and collaboratively deliver successful development projects and contractual obligations.
  • Identify and share best practice within the team and where relevant celebrate success and share learnings and challenges across the organisation.
  • Represent City to Sea at high level internal and external events, joint steering committees and working groups.
  • Ensure self and team maintain accurate data records at all times.

INCOME GENERATION

  • Responsible for development of income from Corporate Clients, NGOs, Public Sector, Trusts & Foundations
  • Lead team in submitting high quality bids and proposals to secure funding
  • Developing repeatable traded revenue from City to Sea’s assets such as behaviour change expertise, the Refill app and Refill Return Cup.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of market and competitor activity to maximise benefits.
  • Represent City to Sea in industry/media as required, speaking at conferences and events, representing City to Sea in the media and delivering thought-leadership content
  • Develop and manage relationships with senior levels contacts within partner organisations

INNOVATION

  • Development of new product and sector opportunities for City to Sea
  • Working with CEO and SLT to explore new business models and funding streams
  • Working with the CEO / Head of Marketing & Campaigns / SLT to develop new funded campaigning and fundraising opportunities
  • Develop a platform and process for brainstorming and idea creation at City to Sea to unlock and harness the creativity across our team in support of our vision and ACOs

OTHER

  • Ensure team and strategy delivers, and adheres to, City to Sea’s diversity and inclusion commitments
  • Any other duties as reasonably required in line with the skills, knowledge and experience

Personal Specification

  • This is a senior role within the organisation, we are looking for experienced and qualified candidates with:
  • Significant experience in senior leadership role
  • Strong commercial acumen, adept at business development
  • A proven track record for developing products, services or projects that secure income and margin
  • Successful BID writing track record
  • Strong financial literacy
  • Excellent presentation and sales skills
  • Strong communications skills, ability to manage complex industry collaborations and maintain positive relationships
  • Innovative, agile, creative and comfortable with change – we are a small and mighty organisation continually flexing and adapting to meet demand.
  • Experience of working on technology projects and services
  • Understanding of retail, packaging and waste, FMCG, hospitality sectors and public sector
  • Experience working with competing priorities across multiple projects at once.
  • Demonstrable commitment to City to Sea’s mission and vision
