Cut the cutlery campaign win!

Government announce consultation on single use cutlery

In case you missed it, we’ve had a huge campaign win! The #cutthecutlery campaign is making waves as the government has finally announced that they’ll be launching a consultation into banning single-use plastic cutlery this autumn. This news comes after a whopping 95,000 of YOU have signed, our petition – so we want to say a huge thank you to our supporters for making this happen.

What is the consultation about?

As of July 3rd 2021, single-use plastic cutlery, plates and polystyrene (amongst other things) have been banned across Europe as part of the EU Single-use Plastics Directive. Unfortunately, whist the ban was agreed by the UK when we were part of the EU, Westminster is dragging its feet. Although they have now announced they will open a consultation on the issue, a decision or a ban is still months or even years away. For fork’s sake!

So what’s next?

If the UK wants to be a “global leader” then it has to lead on important environmental issues, not fall behind. So, we still need to keep the pressure on, and tell the government that they must, at the very least, match EU legislation on single-use plastics. If you haven’t already, sign the petition and add your voice to the call for urgent action

We will be eagerly awaiting more information on the consultation, and we’ll be in touch as soon as we find out more. Sign up to our mailing list to stay up to date with all the latest news on our campaigns.

In the meantime, there is plenty more Government could be doing. We’ve teamed up with businesses, NGOs, faith leaders and more to call on government to introduce legally binding targets to reduce plastic pollution.
